Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest national park, covering just 33.7 square kilometres in the southwestern corner of the country. Despite its size, the park protects a remarkable section of the Virunga Conservation Area, a chain of volcanic mountains that extends across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park is famous for gorilla trekking in Uganda, golden monkey tracking, and spectacular volcano hiking. Its landscapes include bamboo forests, montane woodlands, and volcanic slopes that provide habitat for a variety of wildlife and bird species. Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Gorilla trekking is the park’s most sought-after experience and offers visitors the opportunity to spend time with one of the world’s most endangered primates. Mgahinga is home to the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, a habituated group known for its stability and impressive number of silverbacks.

Trekking begins at the Ntebeko Visitor Centre, where Uganda Wildlife Authority guides provide a briefing before leading visitors into the forest. The duration of the trek varies depending on the location of the gorillas, but encounters are often highly rewarding due to the family’s tendency to remain within Uganda’s borders.

Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed one hour to observe them in their natural habitat. Watching a gorilla family feed, interact, groom one another, and care for their young offers a rare glimpse into the social lives of these remarkable primates.

Many travellers compare the experience with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda’s other mountain gorilla destination. While Bwindi offers multiple habituated gorilla families, Mgahinga provides a quieter trekking experience with fewer visitors and stunning views of the surrounding Virunga volcanoes.

Golden Monkey Tracking and Wildlife

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only place in Uganda where visitors can track the endangered golden monkey. These energetic and highly social primates are easily recognised by their bright golden-orange fur and playful behaviour within the bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains.

Golden monkey tracking offers a very different experience from gorilla trekking. The monkeys are constantly moving through the forest canopy, creating exciting opportunities for photography and wildlife observation. Visitors can also participate in the Golden Monkey Habituation Experience, which allows more time with researchers and conservation teams studying these rare primates.

Beyond its famous primates, Mgahinga supports a variety of wildlife including bushbucks, giant forest hogs, buffaloes, and several small mammal species. Birdwatchers are equally rewarded, with over 180 recorded bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics that attract birding enthusiasts from around the world.

Volcano Hiking and Cultural Experiences

Three extinct volcanoes rise within the park: Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo, each offering a different level of challenge and spectacular views across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mount Gahinga is the most accessible hike, leading visitors through bamboo forests and alpine vegetation to a scenic crater swamp near the summit. Mount Muhabura offers a more demanding climb but rewards hikers with panoramic views of the Virunga range and neighbouring national parks. Mount Sabyinyo is particularly unique, allowing visitors to stand at the point where three countries meet.

Visitors can also explore the Batwa Trail, a cultural experience led by members of the Batwa community. The trail provides insight into the traditional forest lifestyle of the Batwa people, including hunting techniques, medicinal plants, storytelling, music, and cultural traditions that were once central to life in the forest.

Planning Your Visit to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be visited throughout the year, although the drier months from June to September and December to February generally provide the most favourable trekking and hiking conditions. Trails can become muddy during the rainy seasons, but wildlife viewing remains possible year-round.

The park is located near Kisoro in southwestern Uganda and can be reached by road from Kampala or Entebbe. Many visitors combine Mgahinga with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, and neighbouring destinations featured in our Uganda Rwanda safaris.
