Rwenzori Mountains

Nestled along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwenzori Mountains National Park towers majestically. Often referred to as the "Mountains of the Moon," this park boasts the third-highest mountain range in Africa, with Margherita Peak reaching an astounding 5,109 meters (16,763 ft) above sea level.

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park encompasses a diverse range of landscapes, from the lush green foothills to the snow-capped peaks. Here, glaciers cling to the mountain slopes, waterfalls cascade down dramatic cliffs, and dense rainforests give way to montane vegetation. This rich tapestry of ecosystems provides a habitat for a variety of unique plant and animal life.

A CLIMBER’S PARADISE

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a haven for thrill-seeking mountaineers. Scaling the various peaks, from Margherita Peak, the highest, to Mount Stanley and Mount Speke, offers challenging climbs with breathtaking rewards. Hikers can choose from multi-day treks through diverse landscapes or shorter hikes to explore specific areas of the park.

A BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 700 species of plants, including the giant heather that can grow up to 12 meters (40 ft) tall. The park is also home to over 217 bird species, including 19 that are endemic to the Albertine Rift, a region known for its unique ecological diversity. Keep an eye out for the rare Ruwenzori turaco, with its vibrant crimson plumage, or the elusive African green broadbill.

The park is best visited during the dry seasons (December-February and June-September) when trails are clear and the weather is more predictable.
